As New Belgium’s Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel, Joe works cross-functionally with every aspect of the company’s production and sales functions. He is responsible for oversight of all legal, regulatory, and compliance functions, in addition to heading our Environmental Health & Safety and Governmental Affairs teams.
 
Joe joined the New Belgium team in August 2013 after serving as outside counsel to the brewery on various matters since 2007, including representing New Belgium in a second stage ESOP transaction that resulted in its transition to a 100% employee-owned company. Prior to joining New Belgium, Joe was a partner at Sherman & Howard L.L.C., a super-regional law firm based in Denver.
 
Joe earned his law degree with highest distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law and graduated with honors from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science. He sits on the board of directors of a number of nonprofit organizations, including Wish of a Lifetime, whose mission is to foster respect and appreciation for seniors by granting life enriching wishes, and RamStrength, a local nonprofit that provides support to cancer survivors by furnishing financial assistance for basic needs, scholarships and services.
